Penn State is a part of the Big 10 Conference. Despite its reputation being tarnished by a tragic scandal in 2011 and 2012, it is one of the more storied and history-filled football teams in the NCAA. The team was founded in 1887 and has, since then, won two National Championships and three Conference titles. There has been only one Heisman Trophy winner for the Nittany Lions. The top three greatest players in Penn State football history are Curt Warner, Ted Kwalick and LaVar Arrington.
No. 3: Curt Warner, RB, (1980 – 1982)
Curt Warner was a standout player for Penn State. He led the team in rushing in every season he was at the university. He is perceived by many as being the best collegiate running back of the 1980s. He aided in the Nittany Lions winning the National Championship in 1982. When it was time for him to leave the university, he was the holder of over 40 Penn State records including holding the record for the most rushing yards, with 3,398. He was named an All- American in 1981 and 1982.
No. 2: Ted Kwalick, TE, (1966 – 1968)
When we think of a specimen of a football player, we think of Ted Kwalick. As a starter for three years, he accumulated 1,343 receiving yards, 86 receptions and 10 touchdowns. For a tight end at that time, those numbers were unparalleled. He was an All-American for Penn State in 1967 and again in 1968. In 1989 he was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame.
No. 1: LaVar Arrington, LB, (1997 – 1999)
At a school known as “Linebacker U.,” LaVar Arrington was one of the most famous names. He was simply a tremendous playmaker on defense. In 1998 he was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year. In 1999, Arrington was the nation’s premier linebacker and the best defensive player in the nation, and was rewarded with the Butkus Award and the Bednarik Award. He was named an All-American in 1998 and was a consensus All-American pick in 1999. He went to the NFL after his junior season and was the 2nd overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft.
LaVar Arrington is easily the greatest player in Penn State football history. His standout defensive plays have left many memories in the minds of Penn State fans and are appreciated by many around the country.
